D. Packaging for operational rations. Product for operational rations shall be packaged in accordance with good commercial practice is a 4-gram package. The salt shall be packaged in an envelope having maximum outside dimensions of 2-1/2 inches by 1-5/6 inches by 1/8 inch thick when filled. The envelope shall be made from 25 pounds-per-ream sulfite pulp, kraft pulp, or a mixture. The color shall be natural kraft or dull brown. The paper shall be coated on one side with polyethylene. The envelope shall be formed and closed by heat sealing on no less than three of four sides and shall not allow sifting or spillage of the product.
E. Export packing. Product shall be packed as follows:
(1) Not less than 0.75-gram packet or 5-pounds bag. Twelve 5-pound bags or not more than 15 pounds of the 0.75-gram packets of salt shall be packed in a fiberboard box, constructed, closed, and reinforced in accordance with PPP-B-636, Grade V3c, V3s, or V4s, Style RSC. Packets shall be enclosed in a waterproof case liner fabricated and sealed in accordance with MIL-L-10547 for subsistence items. Reinforcement shall be limited to nonmetallic strapping or pressure-sensitive adhesive, filament-reinforced tape.
(2) Five-pound bag. Twelve 5-pound bags of salt shall be packed in a multiwall paper shipping sack~ fabricated, and sealed in accordance with UU-S-48, Type 1, Style B or Type 11, Style A, Construction 4 or 4X, MB1.
F. Packing envelope for ration assembly. Six paperboard cartons containing 1,000- 4-gram envelopes each or three paperboard cartons containing 2,000 - 4-gram envelopes each shall be packed in snug-fitting containers complying with Uniform Freight Classification or National Motor Freight Classification, as applicable Alternatively, 2,000 - 4-gram envelopes each shall be packed directly in a snug-fitting shipping container complying with the Uniform Freight Classification or National Motor Freight Classification, as applicable.
G. Unit loads (commercial and export). Shipping containers shall be arranged in unit loads in accordance with MIL-STD-35078. When unit loads are strapped, strapping shall be limited to nonmetallic strapping, except for Type II, Class F loads.
H. Labeling (commercial and export). Commercial labeling shall be acceptable.
I. Marking (commercial and export). Marking of unit pack, shipping containers, and unit loads shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-129.
